On Tuesday, I went to that opening with K and her bf and saw lots of the Burners that I have met over the past year. The party was at Avita, a new co-op opening on La Cienega in Hollywood, and some of the work is really quite stunning. In particular I loved the organic cashmere dresses in pink and grey and delicate gold necklaces created by Suki. I did quickly notice that Los Angelenos dress very differently when they go out than their East Coast counterparts. Instead of looking sleek in black, nearly everyone had on flowy dresses or shocking colors. They were definitely funkier. I've got to remember this next time I go out.
Wednesday night I shared dinner with our publisher and advertising rep at Koi - a posh little sushi joint in Hollywood (it's pretty close to Avita). Yum! It's hard to deny the tastiness of yellowtail ceviche and super fresh salmon nigiri. Pleasant conversation and tantalizing dishes kept us there for hours.
Then, last night, I went out with S to the Bruce Davidson photography lecture at the Hammer museum in Westwood. He's been taking photographs since the 1950s and it was a real treat to hear the stories behind his work. What was most interesting about large-format photographer was that he made it a point to seek out interesting subjects, even if doing so might have been dangerous for him. He took photos of Brooklyn Gangs, 100th street in Harlem (then the worst block in Manhattan), the civil rights movement, and the New York subway in 1979/1980. His work was powerful and spoke volumes about those he captured on film. He has a new exhibit opening in New York soon (with a lecture on 5/22) and I highly recommend both.
