Friday night I went out with K and her bf to their friends' house for dinner. It was lovely. They had made vegetable stir fry and about 100 vegan dumplings to enjoy while sitting on the floor of their living room. We stayed late, drinking red wine and talking about Burning Man (everyone's trying to convince me to go this year). I think one of the things I really enjoy so far about LA is that people seem open to meeting new people and welcoming them into their group. I'm not sure if this is a widespread phenomenon, but it's nice. It does, of course, happen in New York too, but it's nice to find here as I'm trying to establish my own groove.
Saturday and Sunday were pretty much devoted to working on the apartment more. But by Saturday night, I really had to get out of the house, and since K and Z were busy, I went upstairs to see what my neighbor was up to. Turns out he was watching the Dodgers game, but he was up for going out and grabbing a few drinks. Instead of driving, we chose to walk the mile to the bar, but we took a route through the Venice canals. They are really incredible. I am going to go back and snap some photos. Each house lining them is so different and you can see into all of them because of their short fences (there's a law saying the fences can't be higher than three feet). It's really very romantic back there, especially with all of the adorable ducks that swim by. We actually got to see some goslings that were looking for their mother who was off looking for food for them.
We ended up going to a cool little dive bar near the beach. When my neighbor was off at the ATM, I ended up meeting the bartender, Ryan, a tall dude with a septum piercing who managed to be the first person to notice my Detroit shirt was based on the Motorhead design. Finally! We chatted for a bit and it turned out he used to go to the Motor City Bar in New York. Cool guy. S and drank a couple rounds before wandering back through the canals and hitting the hay for the night. Well, he got a good night sleep, but I nearly burned our apartment down when I fell asleep with pasta cooking on the stove. Brilliant. I set off the smoke alarm and now the entire apartment smells vaguely of smoke and it's been three days. We've even Febrezed it! Any suggestions would be lovely on how to fix the problem.
This is what I did:
On Sunday night I went out to see Hot Fuzz with Z and his gf and his gf's sister. It's perfect for fans of Shaun of the Dead but some of the devices get a bit repetitive, especially if you've seen Shaun. Still, I definitely recommend it, as once the movie gets going in the second half, it's hilarious. Also on Sunday, S mentioned that there was a feminist exhibit going on a the Moca here and asked if I'd like to go, so maybe we'll end up checking that out this weekend. We're going to an interesting photography lecture together on Thursday at the Hammer Museum. It's for Bruce Davidson, a New York-based photographer, and after his slideshow, we'll get to wander around and view the rest of the museum's collection until 9pm. I'm looking forward to it.
Yesterday wasn't too eventful, just went to my favorite grocery store ever (Trader Joe's for anyone who didn't already know that) with K and spent the rest of the night sitting on the couch drinking wine and eating pizza. Tonight we're going to watch a fashion show at her friend's store opening, so I definitely have to find something fun to wear.
