Ok. I keep hearing that LA people are fake, but you know what? New Yorkers can be fake too. And I think I'd rather deal with more people who are fake and nice than people who are fake and rude. Right?
For instance, this morning I went to Starbucks to get chai, and I asked for my usual. Then, I stepped over to the waiting counter. After two or three minutes, the baristo stopped making drinks and politely asked what my order was. I told him and he noticed that it hadn't been written down on any of the cups. He started working on it, but said that they were just about to open a new gallon of fresh milk so it might be a moment. No problem. When it arrived, he started making my drink and gave me the next size up because I had to wait. Now, I only had to wait maybe five minutes. Wow. That's pretty much the standard waiting time at Starbucks in Penn Station, and they're just plain rude there.
Oh, and also, I've noticed at concerts people actually try to enjoy themselves. Shocking! Instead of standing there with their arms folded looking bored, they make an effort to get into it. Well, at least they did at the Hotel Cafe. And they talk to other people! I met three people that night versus a whopping zero that I usually meet at New York shows. Now I'm not saying New York sucks, but I'd just like to point out the difference. I dunno if it's because I don't look like most LA girls and I do tend to blend in in New York, or what, but so far I like the change.

You obviously have never been to the Starbucks on 57th between Lex and Park. These people are sooo friendly and always hand out some free pieces of cookies and deserts, I don't even know how to handle it living in NY for almost 4 years now. You can't just smile back and be nice, that is kind of 'against the rules' ya know?!
ReplyDeleteWow! Next time I'm definitely going up there. I usually avoided the Upper East Side for fear of being bitten by one of those little teacup chiuhauas or getting stepped on with someone's Jimmy Choo, but maybe I'll have to make the trip!
