Day 11

Woo! The boxes are almost all unpacked. Yesterday the handyman came over to help us hang shelves, put up curtain rods, and secure the towel rack to the bathroom wall. It almost feels homey now! I'm in desparate need of a bookshelf because as all of you know, I have waaaaaay too many CDs and video games and books and they're sort of taking over our entryway. Oops.

Last night wasn't too eventful - though I did get a little frustrated with the promptness with which this sushi joint (Sushi Mac) closed! They don't take phone orders (what's up with that?) and I got there 5 minutes after they "closed" (there were still a ton people eating when I got there) and they weren't having it with me placing an order.

On a whole, businesses here seem to close much earlier than places in New York, which I'm going to have to adapt to. The Sushi Mac place closed at 9, and it was a bummer because everything on their menu is $2.50. Yup. $2.50. That includes rolls, nigiri, sashimi, everything! But K helped me find another place that was open later so I could satisfy my craving.

Today I've got to go listen to the new Interpol record up at the Capitol records building, and perhaps go to a dinner get together with K and her bf.

Day 10 cont.

Ok. I keep hearing that LA people are fake, but you know what? New Yorkers can be fake too. And I think I'd rather deal with more people who are fake and nice than people who are fake and rude. Right?

For instance, this morning I went to Starbucks to get chai, and I asked for my usual. Then, I stepped over to the waiting counter. After two or three minutes, the baristo stopped making drinks and politely asked what my order was. I told him and he noticed that it hadn't been written down on any of the cups. He started working on it, but said that they were just about to open a new gallon of fresh milk so it might be a moment. No problem. When it arrived, he started making my drink and gave me the next size up because I had to wait. Now, I only had to wait maybe five minutes. Wow. That's pretty much the standard waiting time at Starbucks in Penn Station, and they're just plain rude there.

Oh, and also, I've noticed at concerts people actually try to enjoy themselves. Shocking! Instead of standing there with their arms folded looking bored, they make an effort to get into it. Well, at least they did at the Hotel Cafe. And they talk to other people! I met three people that night versus a whopping zero that I usually meet at New York shows. Now I'm not saying New York sucks, but I'd just like to point out the difference. I dunno if it's because I don't look like most LA girls and I do tend to blend in in New York, or what, but so far I like the change.

Day 10

It's sunny and warm again. So weird! This is definitely going to take some getting used to. I've just (finally) turned my copy in, so I can breathe a little today and start working on the August issue. Our gas service just came so now we have heat and can cook on the stove, so now I don't have to pop over to D's house to sautee vegetables like I did last week. Awesome :)

Last night I spent hours unpacking, and got through nearly two-thirds of my boxes. I'd love to finish the rest up tonight if at all possible, or this weekend. That way there aren't boxes sitting all over the living room, and I'll feel more settled.

Day 9

I'm going to get the bad stuff out of the way first. I'm mad! Hopping mad. Irate, even. Last night my furniture arrived from New York with all of my boxes. Now, that's good, but on the way, they broke my great aunt's antique desk. It's invaluable and they broke one of the pieces off the top and one of the legs. This sucks. If anyone knows a great furniture restorer in the Los Angeles area, I would be so appreciative to hear about it.

Here's what happened:

Ok. Now on to the better stuff. The show last night was incredible. It was a benefit concert for Food Not Bombs and Axis of Justice held at this tiny place called the Hotel Cafe (about the same size as Pianos in New York). K, Z, and I rolled in a little after 9 just as the MC for the night, Tom Morello (lead guitarist from Audioslave and Rage Against the Machine), was finishing his set. After him followed Alanis Morissette who performed three songs, including a cover of "Guerilla Radio" that got the crowd pumped. She later did a duet of "More Than Words" with Extreme's guitarist Nuno Bettencourt. She's prettier in person.

Speaking of guitarists, I ended up standing next to John 5 and who I'm assuming is his new girlfriend for a little while. The place was packed with music celebrities. For instance, Lars Ulrich from Metallica was just chilling in the back and Tommy Lee was hanging out on the side.

Alexi Murdoch followed Alanis, and if you've never heard his sweet, melodic music, you should remedy that. Many artists followed with short solo sets including Ben Harper, John Sinclair and Wayne TK from the MC5, William TK and Jerry Cantrell from Alice in Chains, and Jill Sobule, but the party really got rockin when the jamming started. Morello got onstage with Motley Crue's Mick Mars and others and rocked "Kickstart My Heart" and Judas Priest's "TK" then Cypress Hill claimed the stage and tore the house down with "Rock Superstar," "Kill A Man," and "Insane in the Membrane," all with Morello backing them on electric guitar. Hot.

Seriously, this was probably one of the most awesome shows I've ever seen and I've been to countless concerts. And we only paid $10 to get in! On the way out I bought two raffle tickets to try and win posters signed by everyone who performed (the donations went to the causes) and ended up talking to some dude who grew up in Royal Oak. After the sadness of the furniture incident, this was a fantastic way to end the night. Then I woke up today and it's all sunny and nice again!

Day 8

Nothing really of note happened yesterday. Tried to get my license at the DMV but I got there too late to take the written test. I got everything else taken care of though - picture, vision test, paying them, etc. but now I just have to study and go back for my exam.

After work I went by Santa Monica's 3rd street promenade because I wanted some Fleur de lys hooks for my closet. On the way home, I decided to drive by the ocean (on "Ocean" no less) instead of driving through the city. It was so gorgeous - blue sky stretching as far as I could see and the landscape was dotted with bright colored buildings and palm trees. Ahhh, sigh. When I got home, K and I took off again for a low-key Italian dinner then met her brother at an upscale sushi restaurant (Golden Pearl) in Pacific Palasades. The waiter kept harassing us, but the green tea ice cream was worth the hassle.

This is the view from the parking garage on the 3rd Street Promenade:

And this is the view on the drive home:

Right now, I'm just chilling here, kinda hungry at my desk waiting for my interview to call. It was scheduled for 40 minutes ago, and I'm still waiting...I hope they call soon, because I need lunch.

Tonight should be fun - there's a really cool event happening at the Hotel Cafe in Hollywood.

Weekend 1

Wow. My first weekend in LA was pretty awesome. Nothing super star studded and crazy, but I did meet some great new people and got to nest a bit :)

On Saturday I woke up and drove over to the VW dealership. They needed to finish detailing my car (they hadn't quite finished on Thursday even though I waited, oh, I dunno three hours for it), and they thought that would take a while, so I had Z pick me up.

LA Moment: On the way back towards the house, we were stopped from making a left turn by a cop and there was a long motorcade of hot sports cars (Ferraris, Lamborghinis, etc.) that cruised by, and hanging out of a few were guys with cameras. There was even a helicoper above us. It was pretty crazy. The whole event only lasted for a few minutes, but it was fun to watch.

See?!

There was even a helicopter.

We then headed over to Venice and grabbed some lunch at this yummy BBQ place called Baby Blues. After munching on Cuban-style corn, we cruised by the Painted Lady to see Mary. She's responsible for the decor of the local Urban Outfitters and most of her secondhand furniture has been painted white or a garish (but fun) pink. I snagged a 64" French dresser and a nightstand for about $250, including delivery (though my upstairs neighbor had to help the guy get it in the door). Not bad. I spent most of the rest of the day organizing and chilling with K until I headed out with my cousin to his friends' show down in Culver City.

The show was fun. The guys in the band (Jackyl Headed Front) were cool and a million times better than the guy they went on after. That dude was like a walking Hollywood cliche. He and his band performed dull spoken word songs about crystal meth and he definitely tried to seem way cooler than he actually was. I enjoyed JHF, though admittedly, I spent most of the time talking to the people around me and making friends. I got some dating advice from one of the girls there - all guys in LA are liars or cheaters. She's apparently dated a bunch of guys who turned out to have longterm girlfriends. I'm really not looking for diddly squat except friends right now, so I'm not going to worry about that, but it might not be bad to keep that in the back of my mind for some later date.

LA Moment 2: On the way back, my cousin and I drove past Sony Studios, and there, on the side of the building, was a giant blow-up Spider-Man in the black costume. It was HUGE!

On Sunday, I actually slept in till 10, which is wicked late for me. K and I went out with her bf to grab some coffee and lunch at this super super cute 50s style diner where there were a bunch of dudes chilling with their Cameros and Firebirds and other souped-up muscle cars.

The view from our outdoor table was lovely. It was of the marina and you could see all of the yachts and smaller boats bobbing in the water.

After lunch, the three of us made the trip down to IKEA so we could get all of the essentials for the house (curtain rods, mats, etc.) and we spent the rest of the day attempting to hang photos, towel racks, and other doodads. A few things went up, but we're struggling a bit with the bathroom since the walls are sheet rock and they crumble easily.

After the two of them scooted out for the night, my upstairs neighbor invited me to have dinner with him and his friend and other roommate. While it misted, they grilled steak, salmon, artichokes, potatoes, and asparagus and told me about all the great bars and farmer markets in the area and other little places I should know about. When dinner was ready, we went upstairs and I got to watch the end of the Red Sox/Yankees game (the sox swept for the first time in 17 years - nice work guys) and enjoy the meal over a bottle of red wine with three new friends.

Day 4/5

About to jet off to a Common listening session up in Hollywood and gotta grab some Starbucks on the way (there's some new york habits I still can't quite shake), so I gotta buzz out soon, but here's what's going on! Oh, and it's raining, which is really funny because Los Angelenos have no clue that you gotta bring an umbrella with you when the weather is gross.

update: the Common listening session was awesome. Met the three editors of Filter, and Common took us through each track he had finished on his upcoming record. Can't wait to hear it again.

On the way, I passed the Hustler HQ. Porn is very big in LA. Literally.

Yesterday was slooooowwww. I got my new car, a black Jetta with a sunroof, ipod adapter (gotta get one of those...) and fake leather seats. It feels very fancy, especially since I was used to driving around minivans. I dropped off the rental car yesterday morning and then the guy from the dealership picked me up and drove me back to Santa Monica so I could get my car. I waited for-ev-er to get the darn thing! They were having some problems removing the wax, and I still have to bring it back tomorrow so they can finish. hmph. but the guy and I had a nice chat. He's from the area and was telling me some great places to go to and while waiting for the car we grabbed some lunch at a delicious place that serves damn good mac and cheese. It's called Baby Blues. Yum!

The new car (It does rain here! Just not very often.)

After work, I met up with Z and his girlfriend and headed down to the beach so she could finish shooting a commercial she's entering into an amateur contest. I had to stand there on the beach with a magazine and look like I was trying to catch the last of the light, then look forlorn with Z arrived and we realized there was no more light.

Then we did some roof shots at Z's place before taking a break to grab some dinner at this delicious Mexican restaurant near the house. I think it was called La Cabana, but the more important thing is that their chile relleno and enchalidas are incredibly tasty. Not to mention their patron margaritas!

Here's to new adventures!

By that time it was night, so we headed back to the beach with the camera and secretly filmed some of the light coming out of the beach mansions. hehe. By that time it was getting pretty chilly here on the beach. I know, it's LA, but it's still spring and everyone keeps assuring me it'll get warmer.

When the shooting was done, Z and I headed out to a local watering hole called Saints and Sinners. It sort of looked like what Yaffa's bar would look like if they had one.

Places to check out:
El Cid
Red Sox bar in Santa Monica
4100 Sunset

I'm going to post pics as soon as my cord arrives so I can do so. A train got derailed yesterday with all of my boxes on it (I hope everyone's ok) so they're supposed to arrive today.

Day 3

Work is getting a little crazy. All my copy is due asap and I'm trying to balance this against getting a car, keeping the cat happy, tidying up the house, etc. Plus, I'm trying not to spend a crazy amount of money. I feel like my savings are going away quicker than ever, and this is terribly disconcerting. I'm hoping I made the right decision by doing this. Right now I'm feeling sort of sad - it's hard being across the country from almost everyone I know, even if it is beautiful here. I haven't met anyone yet, though I do have a lot of lunch meetings and dinner meetings and parties I'm supposed to go to soon. However, it doesn't feel as depressing as not knowing many people in New York. If I get really unhappy I can just go walk on the beach or go for a walk and enjoy the sun.

The office is interesting. They play music on one side all day, but I certainly didn't expect to hear Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart." Curious choice. I'm getting my car tonight - a black Jetta. I used to have a Jetta, so I think this will work out fine for now. S has been reaching out to me as well, and I need to get in touch with him, but today has been very busy so I haven't really had a chance to do that quite yet.

Day 2

Yawn!

I'm still stuck on East Coast time! I went to bed last night around 10:30, and woke up this morning around 7! I suppose my body will eventually adjust, and for now it's convenient, but it's sorta funny. Today I'm planning on getting a dresser and some other supplies so I can start putting up my pictures and getting settled. I've also got to pay my taxes, go check out cars, and get a library card. It's a lot to do on top of working, but I think I can manage. Once my copy is turned in at work I think I'm going to take a personal day to sort everything out, but it also makes sense for me to wait till my stuff arrives, which will be this weekend.

Oh, that's nice. I can hear a bird chirping outside. It's so nice to step outside and be able to sit on the front steps and see grass and trees and kids laughing riding their bikes. It's a change from new york. Ok. Gotta go start doing stuff.

Day 1

After four days of driving cross country, which I'll talk more about later, I finally arrived in SoCal around 10:30pm Sunday night. Unfortunately, I was way too exhausted and sick (I have a cold) to be too excited about it, but it's nice being here, especially with all the rain I hear that the east coast has been having. Also, it's nice to be out of the car since Atari has been meowed for almost the entire ride. I still have a little bit of a residual headache about it. I woke up early yesterday, hung out with my roommate K for a while, then got dressed and headed over to work to pick up my paycheck, meet everyone, and check out my new office. Pretty cool. Lots of porn sets, but that's on one side of the office and I'm on the other. The drive isn't far from my house - about 15 minutes - which is shorter than my new york commute was and pretty much unimaginable as far as los angeles commutes go.

After that, I headed over to Ralph's, a grocery store, and picked up some tasty healthy food (although I had to grab some jello pudding pops too since I have been looking for them for years!). It seems food is a little more expensive out here, but maybe not. I did buy a few things I won't be buying every week (shampoo, conditioner, razor, etc.) so that jacked up the price about $15. So, maybe after I count that out $60 isn't too terrible.

Then I headed home, made some lunch and worked from home for a while. My computer and office stuff isn't arriving until Thursday at the office, so it's sort of pointless for me to go in there until it does. The rest of the day was spent napping, calling friends, and putting stuff away from the move. Seriously, exciting, but that's what happens when you're sick. The weather is nice though - about 65 - and it's sunny so that makes everything feel easier to do when you're not feeling your best.
